Video Project Roles

Video projects require a number of people to create a successful video project. Some roles may be combined depending on the scope of the project.

Executive Director

The Executive Director is usually the teacher who is ultimately responsible for the progress of the projects. This “head of studio” position approves project ideas, meets with Directors/Producers to ensure the project remains on-task and appropriate, mediates any team issues, and assigns final gr4ades to video productions. The Executive Director is the “guide on the side”, yet is still available to support any student needs.

Producer/Director

The Producer/Director is usually the same person for our projects. He/she is the main person in charge of the production. They oversee the acquisition of images and video, according to the approved plan. They will be the person that receives the grade for the final project. This role can be combined with the Editor.

Researcher

The Researcher is responsible for finding, analyzing, and compiling the information necessary for the video project. All research should be conducted using credible resources – library, internet, interviews, primary source materials, etc. They are also in charge of obtaining the sound, video clips and effects needed for the final film.

Camera Operators

The Camera Operator(s) is in charge of the equipment during the shoot. They are the ones responsible for creating the digital video footage. They will determine if additional takes are necessary, the sound is adequate, lighting good and background appropriate.

Actors (Talent)

The Producer/Director will choose the actors for performing in front of the camera. They are responsible for following the script provided to them. They are responsible for delivering an error-free and convincing presentation onscreen. No matter who is starring in your video production, make sure that you obtain the proper permission – the Talent Release Form.

Writers

The Writers are in charge of creating the script for the Actors. They will work with the Director to include directions for the actors while performing.

Editor

The Editor will facilitate the process of downloading the footage onto the computer, and edit the unnecessary parts out. They will also insert appropriate text slides (as per the Producer), transitions, titles and credits, listing all the people who contributed to the film. They will also add the sound, effects and images from the Researchers.

Production Assistants

The PA is the utility player on the production crew. The grip helps carry equipment to the shoot, helps actors with the microphones, holds bounce boards for lighting, and does anything else the Producer/Director requests.
